What is VIPRE Enterprise Premium?
Kiss Your Antivirus Bloatware Goodbye...
Frustrated with Symantec, McAfee, Trend Micro, and other slow, bloated, hard-to-manage corporate endpoint protection? Say hello to an all-new technology that will make end-user threat management faster and easier than you ever thought possible.
What's New In VIPRE Enterprise Premium?
We have kept all the strong points of VIPRE Enterprise. It's still a super-low overhead single endpoint agent. No bloatware here! We included a 2-way desktop firewall, Host Intrusion Protection (HIPS), Intrusion Detection System (IDS), Network Intrusion Protection System (NIPS) and comes with Ad- and script blocking, Bad URL filtering and anti-phishing.
You also get a unique IDS functionality - as an admin you have the ability to write detailed rules based on Snort® for zero day threats that may not have a patch available and deploy your new rule to all agents. These rules can be made to block defined patterns of traffic incoming or outgoing. You have web filtering capabilities to block content like Java script, VB scripts, ActiveX and malicious advertisements at the endpoint.
A new multi-site service, called 'VIPRE Site Service' that allows you to set up "tiering" and "peering" for large-scale network deployments. The VIPRE Site Service, along with a new feature that allows you to grant granular security permissions, is ideal for multi-site organizations and Managed Service Providers, as you can create a site for each office location or customer, and give limited admin privileges for the remote site.
A new, stand-alone Report Viewer provides you with the option to give company execs access to all data in any format they choose without giving them access to the console or database.
Super small virus detections are now processed and sent out continually throughout the day, typically one per hour, via the new VIPRE SteadyStream™ mechanism.
Has VIPRE Been Antivirus Certified?
That's a yes. VIPRE is West Coast Labs Checkmark 'WildList' Anti-Virus Desktop certified, and the world's premier antivirus lab Virus Bulletin said about VIPRE: "Perhaps one of the most long-anticipated VB100 appearances, ...it is with great excitement that we finally get to record and report some results." Virus Bulletin continued in their VIPRE review (tested on Windows 7): "The WildList proved no obstacle despite the set of tricky Virut samples, and with no false positives either VIPRE earns a VB100 on its first appearance; we hope to see many more." VIPRE has been tested by Microsoft and is officially compatible with Windows 7 as per September 2009 (VIPRE is also approved for Windows XP and Vista). VIPRE will continue to receive additional certifications through time.
Real-Time Live Threat Data Integration
VIPRE Enterprise Premium benefits from multiple sources for its threat
definition updates with live threat data from SunbeltLabs™ integrated directly into VIPRE. SunbeltLabs processes tens of thousands of malware samples a day and leverages the following:
ThreatNet™ – Sunbelt's user community of hundreds of thousands of VIPRE consumer users that anonymously send information on possible threats to Sunbelt.
Sunbelt CWSandbox™ – the leading automated malware behavior analysis tool for fast and autonomous analysis of large volumes of malware samples.
ThreatTrack™ – SunbeltLabs' data feeds that include the latest malicious URLs used to block bad websites and phishing emails.
SteadyStream™ Updates – provide compact and continuous updates throughout the day -- at least once an hour. Incremental updating technology minimizes the size of regular update files, with fast application of updates.
Does The System Admin Community Like VIPRE?
VIPRE Enterprise just won the 2009 Windows IT Pro Magazine Gold Community Choice Award! (You can compare it to the 'People's Choice' for enterprise software.) Michele Crockett, editorial strategy director said: "Thousands of products were nominated by our audience of IT professionals. Peer-to-peer product and service recognition is the ultimate goal that all market players have, but it can be difficult to achieve. Our Windows IT Pro Magazine communities even the playing field by calling out their favorite products based on performance and service. Our winners have earned a unique honor to stand out among their peers as winners of our Community Choice Awards."
"Consumes Less Resources, Has Higher Scan Speed"
The independent Tolly Group confirms this in their September 2009 Anti-virus Performance Test Report: "Consumes up to 38% and 45% less memory, and offers up to 2.6x and 3.6x scanning speed compared to Symantec and McAfee."
Sick And Tired Of Hard-To-Manage Bloatware?
Sunbelt realizes that as a system / security administrator, you have better things to do than to put out fires and listen to end users complain about slow computers. VIPRE Enterprise Premium was built for the administrator that is sick and tired of old-style enterprise endpoint suites that have bolted on module after module and now are peddling bloatware as a security solution.
VIPRE Enterprise Premium is designed to optimize overall performance by integrating enterprise antivirus, antispyware and a client firewall together into one, single, powerful engine. This combination of technologies gives you high-performance endpoint protection with anti-malware software that doesn't slow down users' PCs, is low on system resources, and makes it easy for you to protect your network.
With its next-generation technology, VIPRE Enterprise Premium means powerful protection against today's highly complex malware threats. No more system slowness and resource headaches of older corporate endpoint products!
Cutting-edge Proactive Protection
Sunbelt's advanced security technology is famous for being in the front
lines in the battle against new and unknown malware, known as 'zero-day threats'.
VIPRE's Active Protection™ delivers real-time monitoring and protection against known and unknown malware threats. Active Protection works inside the Windows kernel (the core of the operating system), watching for malware and stopping it before it has a chance to execute on your system. (Other anti-malware products allow the malware to run on your computer to try and watch for bad behavior which is less safe).
MX-Virtualization™ analyzes malware in real-time, in a secured memory "lock box" that emulates Windows. MX-V fools the malware into thinking it has taken over your PC. MX-V allows VIPRE to observe how the malware behaves and kill it before it infects a machine. MX-V technology is the safest way to protect against zero-day threats.
VIPRE's Genscan™ and Cobra™ heuristics use super efficient dynamic pattern assessment to determine if something is malware.
FirstScan™ removes rootkits at the system's boot time and bypasses the Windows operating system, to directly scan certain locations of the hard drive for malware, removing infections where found. Includes native
support for 32 and 64-bit Windows platforms.
Client Firewall And Web Filtering
The VIPRE Enterprise Premium version integrates a client firewall, host-based intrusion prevention (HIPS), network intrusion prevention (NIPS), and an intrusion detection system (IDS) that proactively protects against exploits and zero-day threats.
Unique IDS functionality – Included in VIPRE are pre-defined IDS rules that are updated through VIPRE threat signatures. You also have the ability to write detailed rules based on the
Snort®
language to complement your own security profile. Rules can be made to block admin-defined inbound or outbound traffic.
Boot time firewall – The Boot Time feature allows you to limit access on a desktop to only certain network resources upon loading.
Ad blocking – Automatically block third-party advertisements to reduce web page clutter.
Script blocking – Optionally block Java script, VB scripts, and ActiveX controls.
Bad URL blocking – Bad website blocking that uses the comprehensive ThreatTrack malicious URL feeds from SunbeltLabs.
Anti-phishing – Blocks access to known phishing websites by email or through the web browser.
Powerful, Comprehensive Scanning Agent Technology
The VIPRE Enterprise Premium agent is based on the same advanced technology as VIPRE for consumers. VIPRE Enterprise Premium utilizes a high speed threat scanning engine that can scan large volumes of information for malware threats in a short period of time with limited performance impact on the end user's machine. VIPRE's innovative enterprise antivirus solution has optional agent user interface, users can stop and start scans and manage their own quarantine if you choose to give them access.
The configurable dashboard gives you a centralized, policy-driven malware management console with multiple methods of deployment that work!
VIPRE Enterprise Premium supports multiple methods of agent deployment to allow you flexibility in how agents are pushed to your users' systems. Within the Admin Console, an agent deployment wizard helps you select a deployment option and assists you with your deployment configuration. (Silent push install, MSI file, AD Policy based on OU's, IP range and machine lists).
Policy-based management with 'report-only' default, so you can see the state of your network
VIPRE Enterprise Premium has sophisticated policy creation and management functionality that gives you the flexibility to control scheduling of quick scans and deep scans, set scan options (including scanning of known locations, whether to scan cookies, and whether to scan running processes), and allow specific threats from the database. VIPRE ships with the "Action Taken" option set to 'report only'. By default, VIPRE does not remove or quarantine anything. This default policy allows you to run an initial scan on machines without any remediation actions. It is easy and fast to take default policies and modify them to suit your environment.
Integration For NAC Support
VIPRE customers have seamless integration with their NAC (Network Access Control) devices, SSL VPNs and more through OPSWAT's OESIS-enabled framework.
VIPRE is OESIS Gold Certified. This provides seamless, integrated control and visibility from the gateway to the desktop when using any OESIS-enabled device, including the market-leading NACs and SSL VPN gateways from vendors such as Cisco, F5, Juniper, Microsoft,
and many others. These devices will automatically recognize your VIPRE endpoints and enforce your security policies down to the desktop.
Flexible Reporting
VIPRE's reporting features make it easy for you to schedule and customize its library of reports. A report scheduler allows you to easily schedule any report to run at a designated time with the ability to email reports to specified users; simplifying report distribution to management. Additionally, a stand-alone report viewer enables you to provide executive management access to all data in any format without giving them access to the console or database.

VIPRE Enterprise Premium Frequently Asked Questions
+ What are the resources needed on the Server and Agent?
We will typically use about 100-250 Meg of RAM on the Server, but that depends somewhat on the amount of agents managed by that server. Agent memory consumption is typically around 30 to 40 megs with Active Protection enabled. During a deep scan it can get up to 60meg.
+ Does it support Terminal Server and Citrix?
VIPRE Enterprise supports both TS and Citrix environments. It's a simple case of running an agent on these servers and the "sessions" but you still need to run VIPRE agents on the workstations so that they are protected locally. Licensing for TS and Citrix is super simple. You just pay for one agent on that server
+ Does this product scale? Can I support 20,000 or 50,000 users? Can I manage remote sites?
Yes on all three. VIPRE supports SQL Express for storing information. (no full MS-SLQ server license needed) SQL Express easily supports 50,000+ users. You may need to spread this over several servers to balance the load though. The new 'VIPRE Site Service' multi-site tiering model for large-scale deployments enables distribution of IT workload, allowing regional IT staff to manage local incidents through granular role-based access control or multi-site configuration.
+ Can we hide the icon from the end-users? I know the end-users cannot do anything with the icon, but some (as I'm sure most do) will instantly start blaming their age-old computer issues on the newest icon in the tray. Can we hide it?
Yes you can. It is under the Agent tab for the policy and it is set to off by default
+ My users do not have local admin rights, so I'm safe against malware, right?
Local admin rights are not needed to install many types of malware. It certainly helps if users aren't local admins but it's far from 100% effective. A lot of malware gets installed under the radar.
+ How do I cost justify this tool to management?
Easy. It takes an average of 20 minutes to clean up a machine infected by spyware. Take the average hourly cost for an admin, and you can do three manual "disinfections" per hour. Run the eval for a month with the default 'report-only and you'll get an idea of the amount of infections. And those are just *your* hourly wages. Include the lost time of the employee! Apart from all that there is the threat to the security of your company. How much is the cost of an average security breach? The lowest estimate is in the tens of thousands of dollars even for a small business.
+ How do I protect home users, and road warriors with laptops?
You can deploy VIPRE Enterprise Premium agents to your laptop users as long as they will have the ability to communicate back to the VIPRE Enterprise server on occasion. Additionally, VIPRE has a 'client' version that operates stand-alone and has additional active-protection anti-malware safeguards. It uses the same malware risk database as the Enterprise version and updates itself over the Net. You can license these separately. You can find more information about VIPRE Antivirus + Antispyware consumer version on this site.
+ Do I need any scripting at all, to deploy agents or to drive command line interface scanning like some other tools?
None of that is needed. Everything is driven by your 'Malware Command Center' Admin Console. If the VIPRE Server detects that a machine has no agent where one is supposed to be, it will push an agent down to that workstation.
+ Will the VPN we run prevent remote users from infecting my network?
No. Virtual Private Networks (VPN) provide a secure, encrypted tunnel between a remote user and the network through your firewall. If the remote user's machine has malware, the VPN will transmit that code through the firewall directly into your network without detection. VIPRE properly deployed on all the workstations on your network is the only way to ensure detection.
+ How does the pricing work for VIPRE Enterprise Premium?
Volume discounts apply depending on the number of seats you get, and roughly lie between 20 and 36 dollars per seat, based on a simple sliding scale. For more information contact a Sunbelt Sales Representative or your Reseller. Make sure you ask about for the new 2010 Competitive Upgrade 50% discount, which makes VIPRE a no-brainer replacement for your old antivirus bloatware.
+ How do I deploy VPE in my network?
Rolling out agents was never easier. Simply assign machines to a policy and the agents get pushed out via a silent install. As well there is an automatic deployment functionality where machines can be specified by IP address, IP ranges, IP subnet, machine name, and Active Directory OU. Additionally, the agent can be created as both an MSI file and executable, you can also use SMS, login scripts, or even a webpage to download the agent to any workstation.
+ Is Windows Server 2008 supported by VPE and its agents? How about Windows Vista and Win7?
Yes, all platforms, 32- & 64-bit. VIPRE has been Microsoft Windows 7 certified.
+ How do I upgrade my CounterSpy Enterprise agents to VPE agents?
Once the VPE server has been upgraded, the simplest way to update the agents is by setting them in the policy(s) to automatically check for software updates. This setting is located under the "Advanced" button on "Agent" tab of the policy. NOTE: If you have more than a 100 agents on a single policy you may want to create a copy of the policy, set it to automatically upgrade the agents and then move a 100 agents at a time to the new policy so as to not overload your network with upgrading agents.
+ How do I upgrade my CounterSpy Enterprise to VIPRE Enterprise (VPE)?
Upgrading the server is a simple process of running the VIPRE Enterprise installer on the CSE server, all existing information and settings will be migrated.
+ Where can I find more FAQs about VIPRE Enterprise?
+ Does the firewall run local to each machine?
Yes. The agent contains an integrated firewall that works on each individual workstation.
+ Does the firewall provided in Premium automatically disable the Windows firewall?
Yes, if you enable the VIPRE Firewall via your console.
+ Regarding the Site Service, can I use sites to provide local servers for satellite offices that are part of the same domain with the same license code?
With 4.0, you can have local update servers. You can also have multiple installations of the VIPRE Site Service (multiple sites) running with one master license key.
+ Can it run on VMware.
Absolutely.
+ Firewall: is the local LAN trusted by default. or do you need to initially create a trusted site to be able to talk to the local server?
With the consumer product, the active LAN is detected and the user is prompted to Trust or Allow. In an Enterprise environment, there can be numerous domains and subnetworks, and assigning trusted status can depend on numerous factors. There is no method for an agent to recognize a trusted network, pass that to the VIPRE Site Service, and propagate that out to other agents.
In a large organization, the admin will need to map out his/her network topology, map out what policies will apply to each domain/subnet, and then determine what networks to add as Trusted for each policy.
The IP Address of the computer the VIPRE Site Service is installed on, is added as a Trusted IP Address to the default policy, which should be used as the starting point. Thus all agents will recognize traffic from the console/Site Service as a Trusted Zone.
+ Will the installer automatically uninstall AV business editions like the VIPRE 3.1 did for Symantec Endpoint?
With 4.0, we are utilizing OPSWAT’s Application Remover utility, which handles the uninstallation of a wide range of products. If a product is not currently supported, OPSWAT has guaranteed us a 30-day turn-around to add that product.
+ How is the performance of the 4.0 console compared with 3.0?
No comparison—4.0 is MUCH faster and easier! There will a little bit of surprise, as the “logic” of the new console is significantly different. It’ll take about an hour or two for the different layout to become familiar, and then it will be extremely easy, in fact intuitive. Most features are nearly identical as in 3.1, with a few rearranged in the new layout.
+ Are you still able to use Windows XP as the platform for the console application?
Yes. The VIPRE Site Service can install on XP, Server 2003, Vista, Server 2008 and W7. The console can be installed with the Site Service, or remotely on the same listed OSes.
+ If I stay just in VIPRE Ent 4 for 3 months then decide to upgrade to Premium how would that work?
Contact your sales rep for pricing. It’s a simple matter of upgrading the console, and existing agents will continue to be supported from the console until they are upgraded to the VEP agent. We made the upgrade process as easy as possible.
+ Is this free upgrade for VIPRE 3.0 Enterprise users? What is cost per station for upgrade if not free?
VIPRE Enterprise 3.1 users will be able to upgrade at no charge to VIPRE Enterprise 4.0. There will be a charge to upgrade to VIPRE Enterprise Premium. Pricing depends on the number of seats, time remaining on your current license, and so on. Please contact your sales rep for specifics. The upgrade price is very reasonable.
+ How do I upgrade to the Premium version?
In the Resources Section is a document that decribes the process.
+ Can I run the console on my Windows 2000 machine?
No, you can only install the agent. The VSS, Console and Report Viewer will not run on Windows 2000 because Microsoft does not support installing .NET 3.5 on Win2k machines.
